Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) seeks a Technical Officer to strengthen health systems for immunization in India. This role supports the prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases by improving routine immunization coverage, facilitating new vaccine introductions, and ensuring access to quality vaccines. The position operates within the SE/HDC Health Promotion, Disease Prevention & Control department.

Job Purpose

The Technical Officer will contribute to the prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in member countries. This involves enhancing routine immunization coverage, supporting measles and rubella elimination, maintaining polio eradication efforts, and facilitating the introduction of new vaccines. A key aspect of the role is assisting countries in developing sustainable systems for equitable access to high-quality, affordable vaccines. The position aims to strengthen national health systems to achieve measurable results in public health outcomes related to immunization.

Responsibilities

Support countries in improving routine immunization coverage through analysis of barriers and development/implementation of operational plans. Develop guidelines and facilitate training on immunization and VPD control. Provide technical assistance for immunization policy development and multi-year planning. Review and support the integration of immunization services within broader health systems, including monitoring Gavi-supported activities. Support surveillance of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) and VPDs, using data to refine strategies. Collaborate with partners for demand generation and address vaccine availability and logistics. Mobilize technical, financial, and human resources to support capacity strengthening and policy integration, aligning efforts with WHO's strategic objectives. Provide comprehensive technical and administrative support, strengthening country office capacity for measurable results.

Work Experience

Essential: Minimum of five years of relevant experience in immunization and vaccine-preventable disease control programs, with demonstrated international exposure. Desirable: Experience in public health, health systems, vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, or communicable disease epidemiology.

Skills

Thorough knowledge of public health and immunization/VPD control. Experience in monitoring, evaluation, and data analysis. Ability to plan and execute national/international training. Strong report writing skills. Proficiency in using computers and modern office technologies. Negotiation skills for dealing with national authorities and agencies.
