It supports scientists from developing countries by providing essential education and skills for successful and enduring careers in their fields. ICTP plays a crucial role in fostering scientific development globally.

Job Purpose

The incumbent will lead the IT Infrastructure Team, overseeing the Centre's hardware and software network and server infrastructure. This encompasses physical IT components like cabling, servers, and data centers, as well as operational software, email servers, phone systems, security systems, and cybersecurity measures. The role involves managing IT staff, setting priorities, and collaborating with other ICT units to ensure synergistic operations. The position requires planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the entire computer system, including UNIX workstations, servers, LAN/WAN, PCs, Macs, and internet connectivity. It also involves managing IT projects, coordinating equipment procurement, and ensuring a secure computing environment, including compliance with data protection regulations. Furthermore, the role supports High-Performance Computing (HPC) activities and provides technical guidance to scientific sections and the library.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include leading and supervising IT infrastructure staff, managing daily operations such as network monitoring, PCs, laptops, data centers, servers, and communication equipment, and overseeing the help-desk service. The role involves setting work priorities for the team and collaborating with the Head of Unit, ICT, and the systems/applications development team on overall priorities and synergies. Planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the Centre's computer system hardware and software, including UNIX workstations, servers, LAN devices, PCs, Macs, and internet connections, is essential. This includes executing hardware and software projects to enhance the ICT infrastructure, particularly in light of ongoing renovations. Coordination with Procurement, Technical Services, and Maintenance for IT equipment deployment, and with the University of Trieste Network Manager for shared services, is also required. Ensuring a secure computing environment, including cybersecurity and data protection compliance, is critical. A minimum of four years of progressive professional experience in IT infrastructure management, including network and server administration, is necessary. Proven experience in leading a technical team, planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining network and server infrastructure (including UNIX/Linux systems), and supporting High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments is essential.

Skills

Required skills include solid knowledge of cybersecurity principles and data protection regulations, strong command of data center, server, storage, LAN/WLAN, and email systems. Excellent planning and organizational abilities, with the capacity to set team priorities and achieve results are crucial. Effective communication with technical and non-technical users, including senior management, and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment are also important.
