Organizational Context
The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) aims to deliver transformative ideas and actions for Africa, guided by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063. The Macroeconomics and Governance Division (MGD) supports African Member States in accelerating economic transformation and inclusive growth through effective development planning and resource mobilization. This Social Affairs Officer role is situated within the Sustainable Development and Integrated Planning Section (SDIPS) of MGD.
Job Purpose
The Social Affairs Officer will contribute to ECA's mission by analyzing sustainable development, development planning, and urban development issues globally, regionally, and nationally. The role involves conducting empirical research, developing methodologies for evaluation, and providing policy advice to member states and organizations. Key functions include preparing reports for intergovernmental bodies, representing the Division at international meetings, and supporting technical cooperation programs. The officer will also assist in resource mobilization efforts and data analysis to inform planning and decision-making, ultimately supporting Africa's transformation and inclusive growth.
Responsibilities
The Social Affairs Officer will conduct social analysis on sustainable development, development planning, and urban development at various levels, undertaking research and recommending policy proposals. This includes developing evaluation methodologies and liaising with government officials and international organizations. The role involves planning and servicing expert meetings, preparing reports, and representing the Division at international forums. Support for intergovernmental processes includes preparing inputs for reports and statements. In technical cooperation, the officer will organize training, prepare project documentation, monitor implementation, and participate in advisory missions. Additionally, the role involves assisting in resource mobilization and performing general duties such as guiding junior staff and utilizing data visualization for reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in development planning, urban development, sustainable development, policy analysis, or sociological research is required. Desirable experience includes quantitative analysis and research in these fields, working in developing countries, supporting technical assistance to member states, and at least two years in data analytics.
