Organizational Context

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN Security Management System. It focuses on security risk management to enable safe and effective UN program delivery in challenging environments. This role is within UNDSS, reporting to the Area Security Adviser in Beni, a designated non-family duty station.

Job Purpose

The Security Coordination Officer (SCO) supports the UN's security and operational responses, particularly concerning Ebola. This involves forecasting security environments, developing risk management strategies, and driving operational planning through situational awareness and critical thinking. The SCO advises on integrating security into all Ebola response activities, supports security-related projects, and monitors preparedness and compliance. The role aims to enable UN activities by providing direct operational assistance, fostering collaboration with stakeholders, and ensuring effective security operations. The SCO also contributes to organizational resilience, crisis decision-making, and supports budget and logistical planning for security activities, while managing security personnel and promoting gender, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

The Security Coordination Officer (SCO) forecasts security environments and supports UN responses, including Ebola operations, by analyzing trends and adjusting security programs. Responsibilities include developing risk management strategies, driving operational planning, and preparing security documents. The SCO advises on integrating security into all phases of UN Ebola response activities, provides operational assistance, and builds consensus among stakeholders. The role involves managing security-related projects, monitoring preparedness, and enhancing communication with various agencies and partners. The SCO collaborates with local entities to understand UN objectives and emerging threats, strengthens personnel capacity through training, and conducts security surveys. Additionally, the SCO supports organizational resilience, contingency planning, crisis decision-making, and the development of evacuation plans. The position also entails supporting security communication systems, budget and logistical planning, resource mobilization, and managing security personnel, while implementing gender, diversity, and inclusion approaches and utilizing data for analysis and reporting.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive experience in security, risk management, emergency preparedness, or related fields is required. Experience in planning and implementing risk mitigation measures is desirable. Field operations experience, international experience, and specialized experience in security programs or risk analysis are also desirable. At least two years of experience in data analytics is preferred.
