Mechanical Engineer
Organizational Context
This position is within the UNECE Sustainable Transport Division’s Vehicle Regulations, Road Traffic Safety and Transport Innovations Section in Geneva. The role reports directly to the P-5 Chief of the Section and indirectly to the D-1 Director of the Division, contributing to international vehicle safety standards and regulations.
Job Purpose
The role serves as the secretary to the Working Party on Passive Safety (GRSP), providing expert technical and legal assistance for developing vehicle regulations under international agreements. This includes preparing and reviewing documents, servicing meetings, and liaising with contracting parties and organizations. The position also manages technical and administrative functions for the 1998 Agreement, analyzing and maintaining global technical regulations and their documentation. Furthermore, it supports policy development for road safety through data collection and analysis, capacity building, and cooperation with international bodies, acting as a focal point for safer vehicles initiatives.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include acting as secretary for the Working Party on Passive Safety (GRSP), preparing and reviewing technical documents, drafting agendas and reports, and servicing meetings. The role involves providing technical and legal expertise to resolve complex issues and facilitate consensus on passive safety requirements. Additionally, it entails managing the technical, legal, and administrative aspects of the 1998 Agreement, including analyzing and updating the Compendium of Candidates and the Global Registry of technical regulations. The incumbent will assist in preparing sessions for WP.29 and AC.3, contribute to analytical and capacity-building activities for road safety policies, and represent the secretariat at international forums. The role also serves as a focal point for safer vehicles initiatives and contributes to multi-disciplinary activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in transport, mechanical/electrical engineering, or the automotive sector is required. At least 2 years of experience in active or passive vehicle safety is desirable. Experience in policy formulation and servicing international meetings is also preferred.
