P-2 vs P-3 vs P-4: how the roles usually differ
P-2, P-3 and P-4 are successive professional grades, but the practical difference is not only years of experience. The degree of autonomy, complexity, stakeholder management and leadership expected usually grows with the level.
P-2: building professional depth
P-2 roles often focus on applying professional knowledge within a defined programme, technical or operational area. Candidates are generally expected to deliver independently on assigned work while receiving guidance on more complex policy or organizational questions.
P-3: established independent responsibility
P-3 vacancies commonly expect candidates to handle a full workstream or substantive portfolio with limited supervision. The role may require coordination across teams, external counterparts, country offices or implementing partners, alongside stronger judgement in planning and delivery.
P-4: senior technical or managerial ownership
P-4 roles frequently combine technical depth with leadership. Depending on the function, this can mean managing a team, owning a complex programme, advising senior stakeholders, setting standards, leading a regional portfolio or coordinating work across several offices.
Do not self-screen on grade alone
A candidate can be highly experienced overall yet still lack a mandatory specialization, language or context requested by a specific vacancy. The reverse can also happen: a candidate with fewer total years may be highly aligned if those years closely match the required function and environment.
Use the grade as an orientation signal, then test your profile against the mandatory requirements and the actual responsibilities in the vacancy notice.
