How to read a UN vacancy before you apply

A UN vacancy can be long, but the information is not equally important. A disciplined reading order helps candidates identify hard eligibility constraints before spending time tailoring an application.

1. Start with the non-negotiables

Check location, contract type, grade, nationality restrictions if any, education, required years of experience and mandatory languages. A strong thematic fit cannot compensate for a clearly stated mandatory requirement that is not met.

2. Separate duties from selection criteria

Responsibilities describe what the person will do. Selection criteria describe what the organization expects the person to bring. Use the responsibilities to understand the job, but use the requirements to decide what evidence your application must demonstrate.

3. Look for repeated themes

If planning, partner coordination, data analysis or team leadership appears repeatedly across the purpose, responsibilities and competencies, that theme is probably central to the role. Your application should make your strongest evidence in that area easy to find.

4. Verify the official source

Aggregators can help you discover opportunities, but the official vacancy page remains the source of truth for deadlines, amendments, application instructions and eligibility. UN Atlas links users back to the originating organization for that reason.
