International Consultant- Nature-based solutions (NbS) for health and well-being
Organizational Context
The WHO Division of Prevention and Health Promotion is addressing the growing strain on health and well-being due to urbanization, climate change, and inequities. Recognizing that health systems are often treatment-focused, there's a need to emphasize prevention and the role of environmental determinants. Nature-based solutions (NbS) are identified as a practical, evidence-based approach to improve population health and well-being while delivering co-benefits for climate and biodiversity.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to develop a policy brief for WHO Member States on leveraging Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance population health and well-being within the European Region. The brief will synthesize evidence, identify practical policy messages, and provide actionable recommendations for integrating NbS into public health and urban planning. By highlighting the links between NbS design, mechanisms of action, and health outcomes, the project seeks to accelerate cost-effective, preventive health strategies. The ultimate goal is to support the development of more resilient and livable communities by reducing long-term health system pressures and promoting equitable access to nature's health benefits.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for synthesizing and contextualizing evidence on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) relevant to preventing disease and promoting health in the WHO European Region, with a focus on economic assessments of interventions. This includes categorizing NbS by diverse settings and criteria (e.g., urban, peri-urban, vulnerable communities, cost-effectiveness) and developing a regional framework of "best-buys" for NbS in health. Key deliverables include an evidence review document, a mapping matrix of existing NbS and health interventions, a categorization framework, a draft and final policy brief, and a PowerPoint presentation for dissemination to policymakers and stakeholders.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience is required in the fields of environment, climate change, and health. This includes relevant experience with systematic reviews and syntheses, as well as experience in environment and health policy. Desirable experience includes work in nature and health initiatives and in designing multi-sectoral policies.
Skills
Strong skills in evidence review, critical appraisal, and synthesis of scientific literature. Knowledge of WHO and the European Environment and Health Process. Expert proficiency in spoken and written English.
