Organizational Context
The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) supports the national response to multiple disease outbreaks. This role is within the AF_COD department, focusing on strengthening epidemiological surveillance and response capacities to control epidemics and reduce mortality.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to strengthen the WHO's capacity in the Democratic Republic of Congo to respond to disease outbreaks. The Epidemiologist will support the implementation, supervision, and continuous improvement of epidemiological surveillance activities. This includes ensuring timely detection, investigation, and reporting of outbreaks, as well as managing data and providing analytical support to inform public health interventions and reduce disease transmission and mortality.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include supporting the detection, notification, verification, and rapid investigation of disease alerts according to national protocols. This involves conducting active case finding, strengthening community death surveillance, and ensuring the quality of investigations and documentation of exposures and contacts. The role also entails managing and analyzing epidemiological data, including updating transmission chains and producing regular reports, dashboards, and analytical summaries. Ensuring data quality and timely entry into systems like DHIS2 Tracker is crucial, alongside reconciling data from various sources and identifying trends and potential outbreaks.
Work Experience
Essential: At least one year of relevant experience in epidemiological surveillance, outbreak investigation, or health emergency response. Desirable: Practical experience in alert management, case investigation, active case finding, contact tracing, and familiarity with data management tools like DHIS2 Tracker and mapping tools.
