Organizational Context

United Nations Peacekeeping missions are vital tools for global peace and security, helping countries transition from conflict to stability. The Real-Time Translation (RTT) Project, led by the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), aims to enhance communication between peacekeepers and local communities. This initiative develops translation tools for underserved languages, particularly in challenging environments, to bridge communication gaps and improve information exchange.

Job Purpose

This role supports the Real-Time Translation (RTT) Project by contributing to the development of a Cypriot Greek language library. The objective is to create verified language data, including translations and audio recordings, to train and evaluate translation tools for peacekeeping operations. By reducing language barriers, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of UN peacekeepers to understand community concerns and facilitate effective dialogue. The work will result in an open-source language library, supporting digital tools for underrepresented languages and contributing to language preservation.

Responsibilities

The volunteer will translate and record English words, phrases, and sentences into Cypriot Greek, focusing on terminology relevant to UN peacekeeping. This includes translating provided material, recording translations to reflect local vocabulary and pronunciation, and reviewing/revising translations and recordings based on feedback. The primary deliverable is a collection of Cypriot Greek translations and corresponding audio recordings, paired with the original English source material. The volunteer must ensure the accuracy and quality of the linguistic data to support the development and evaluation of translation tools.

Work Experience

While not strictly required, previous experience in translation, proofreading, or language teaching is desirable. Essential experience includes fluency in Cypriot Greek and English, with a strong understanding of local linguistic nuances. Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and online communication tools, is also required.

Skills

Key skills include translation and interpretation, writing, editing, and proofreading. Strong communication abilities are essential. The volunteer must demonstrate attention to detail, the capacity to follow guidance and incorporate feedback, and the ability to work independently. Familiarity with local vocabulary, expressions, and pronunciation in Cypriot Greek is crucial.
