Graphic Design and Visual Identity for Disaster Risk Reduction
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, connecting countries to knowledge and resources to build a better life. The UNDP Office in Geneva supports this mission by serving as a platform for Geneva-based organizations and engaging with France and Switzerland. The Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery for Building Resilience Team (DRT) within UNDP focuses on strengthening global capacity for managing and preparing for multi-dimensional risks and shocks, aligning with the UNDP Strategic Plan and Action Agenda.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UNDP Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery for Building Resilience Team (DRT) by curating and designing a coherent visual identity for its knowledge products, learning tools, and communication materials related to disaster preparedness and early warning. The objective is to ensure these materials are visually consistent, accessible, and easily recognizable. The volunteer will contribute to enhancing the impact of critical resources like the UNDP Preparedness Toolkit and Learning Pathway, and collaborate on a serious game developed with IOM. This position offers an opportunity to gain experience in disaster risk reduction and see work utilized globally.
Responsibilities
The online volunteer will focus on two main workstreams: developing the visual identity for a serious game on preparedness, including its materials and promotional assets, and reviewing/proposing a coherent visual identity for the UNDP Preparedness Toolkit and Learning Pathway, adhering to UNDP branding guidelines. Additionally, the volunteer will create a simple visual style guide and reusable templates (e.g., PowerPoint, reports, social media). The second workstream involves designing and laying out reports and publications for print and digital use, including cover design, page layout, and infographics. The volunteer will also design selected communication materials like brochures, flyers, and social media visuals, applying the established visual identity. Expected deliverables include a visual identity package for the game, a style guide and templates, a designed report, and communication materials.
Work Experience
Required experience includes studies or practical experience in graphic design or visual communication. Proven graphic design skills, demonstrated through a portfolio, are essential. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Canva, or Figma is necessary. Experience with brand guidelines and visual identities is an asset, as is experience designing games or interactive learning materials.
Skills
Key skills include graphic design, visual communication, and proficiency in design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Figma). The role requires attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines in a remote setting, and good communication and collaboration skills. An interest in disaster risk reduction, climate change, or international development is desirable. Expertise areas include communication, advocacy, public information, emergency preparedness, crisis response, and digital/social media.
