Mid-Level Data Integration Engineer
Organizational Context
UNICEF has been dedicated to children's survival, protection, and development for 70 years, operating in 190 countries. As the leading provider of vaccines for developing nations, UNICEF supports child health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education, and protection from violence. The organization relies on voluntary contributions and is transitioning its legacy SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) KPI dashboard to a modern, agile reporting ecosystem to enable real-time data insights and enhance global operations monitoring.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for modernizing UNICEF's global KPI dashboard, which was built on outdated SSRS technology. The objective is to transition to a cloud-native platform, specifically Databricks, and refine the underlying business logic. The Mid-Level Data Integration Engineer will play a key part in developing cost-efficient, automated data pipelines and ensuring the new system provides intuitive, high-performance analytics. This modernization effort aims to transform how UNICEF tracks and scales its impact worldwide, enabling country offices to make better-informed decisions through contemporary, real-time data insights.
Responsibilities
The Mid-Level Data Integration Engineer will be responsible for translating business requirements into automated data pipelines for high-value analytics. This includes modernizing the existing on-premises data platform to a cloud-native solution like Databricks and managing/performance tuning pipelines in the Oracle Data Warehouse. Key duties involve implementing monitoring and testing protocols for data quality and reliability, designing and maintaining logical data models and architecture frameworks, and managing CI/CD processes for safe production deployments. The role also requires troubleshooting production data issues, communicating effectively with stakeholders, fostering cross-team data sharing, enforcing engineering standards, and guiding external vendors.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in data warehouse and/or lakehouse concepts, including ingestion, processing, storage, querying, and visualization. Experience with Oracle (19c and beyond), strong PL/SQL or T-SQL skills, and advanced knowledge of Oracle database concepts are essential. Experience with Databricks or similar cloud platforms, LINUX shell scripting, SAP (ECC, Datasphere), and CI/CD/Version Control Systems (TFS, Git) is also required. Experience migrating on-premises data warehouses to the cloud and with ETL tools is desirable.
Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential. The candidate should possess creative vision, a passion for learning, and the ability to adopt and share new ideas. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for interacting with stakeholders. The role requires self-starter capabilities, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and strong collaboration skills in a multicultural environment. Experience in data science, information management, and Artificial Intelligence is also relevant. UNICEF's core values of Care, Respect, Integrity, Trust, Accountability, and Sustainability (CRITAS) are fundamental.
