Organizational Context

UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, aims to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. In South Sudan, a volatile humanitarian crisis persists, marked by conflict, climate shocks, and weak health systems. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, facing limited access to essential health services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) support. UNFPA plays a key role in coordinating and delivering life-saving SRH and GBV services.

Job Purpose

This UN Volunteer assignment supports UNFPA's humanitarian preparedness and response in South Sudan, focusing on priority states and counties. The role is crucial for enhancing communication and visibility of UNFPA's work amidst a complex humanitarian crisis characterized by conflict, climate impacts, and systemic weaknesses. The incumbent will contribute to field program monitoring, coordination, community engagement, and Accountability to Affected Populations. By producing high-quality multimedia content, human-interest stories, and supporting digital campaigns, the volunteer will help disseminate vital information, showcase achievements, and advocate for UNFPA's mandate, ultimately contributing to the delivery of integrated, life-saving services to vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Resource Mobilization, Partnership and Communications Specialist, the UN Volunteer will support the production and dissemination of high-quality photos, short videos, and digital content for UNFPA's website and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). This includes assisting in the design and distribution of communication materials highlighting UNFPA, donor, and partner activities in South Sudan. The volunteer will identify and document human-interest stories, capturing beneficiary quotes during field activities. Responsibilities also include liaising with local media to advance UNFPA's mandate and providing technical support for UNFPA-led events. Additionally, the volunteer will contribute to strengthening knowledge of volunteerism, engaging with local volunteerism forms, reflecting on their actions, and potentially contributing articles on field experiences for UNV publications.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian and development activities is required. Relevant experience in photography, media, communications, or multimedia with UN agencies, international donors, or NGOs is essential. Official accreditation by the National Media Authority for photography and videography is mandatory. Experience in producing and distributing multimedia content for online audiences, using content management systems, and social media tools is highly desirable. Familiarity with reproductive health or gender issues is an asset.

Skills

Key competencies include Accountability, Achieving Results, Adaptability and Flexibility, Creativity, Judgement and Decision-making, Planning and Organizing, Professionalism, and Self-management. Strong communication skills, particularly 'Communicating for Impact', are essential, along with expertise in communication, advocacy, and public information.
