Research Support for SE Asia Region - Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is committed to a sustainable and equitable future by placing nature at the heart of development. The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net), hosted by UNDP, works to address the global nature loss crisis. It supports solutions for people and the planet through finance, governance, and policy expertise. BES-Net is organizing a Regional Trialogue for Southeast Asia to foster collaboration among science, policy, and practice communities.
Job Purpose
This role supports the preparation of the Southeast Asia Regional Trialogue, a key initiative by the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) hosted by UNDP. The Trialogue aims to bridge science, policy, and practice to enhance the implementation of biodiversity knowledge. Volunteers will contribute to developing crucial knowledge products, including background materials, factsheets, and case studies. Their research will ensure that Trialogue discussions are informed by country-specific realities, existing initiatives, and national biodiversity and sustainable development priorities, ultimately strengthening the regional dialogue and action on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Responsibilities
Online Volunteers will conduct targeted research and information gathering to support the Southeast Asia Regional Trialogue. Key duties include reviewing national biodiversity and sustainable development priorities, such as NBSAPs and CBD reports. Volunteers will identify and summarize country-relevant examples of ecosystem restoration, biodiversity finance, sustainable production, and community stewardship. They will also map key stakeholders, including government, research institutions, civil society, and the private sector. Compiling information on relevant economic sectors and identifying good practices, innovations, and "bright spots" are also essential. Furthermore, volunteers will identify implementation challenges, barriers, and opportunities, and contribute references and contacts to contextualize IPBES assessment findings. The primary deliverable is a concise country summary note.
Work Experience
Experience in research, policy analysis, or information gathering related to biodiversity, ecosystems, climate change, or sustainable development is required. Familiarity with national biodiversity or climate institutions, policies, or projects in the volunteer's country is also necessary. Basic knowledge of IPBES processes or a strong interest in learning is beneficial.
Skills
Strong analytical and synthesis skills are essential. The ability to work independently and communicate clearly in writing is crucial. Expertise areas include climate change, environment, knowledge management, research, reporting, and natural resources management. Commitment to volunteerism and respect for human rights are valued.
