Digital Innovation and AI Junior Officer
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aims to end poverty, foster democratic governance, and promote inclusive institutions. In Kazakhstan, UNDP supports the nation's digital transformation of the public sector, focusing on data-driven governance and the responsible application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This includes enhancing the "Akim’s Digital Cabinet," a decision-support system, and exploring AI's potential in public administration to improve planning and decision-making.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment supports UNDP Kazakhstan's initiatives in AI and digital transformation. The role involves identifying and developing AI use cases, exploring AI applications within the "Akim’s Digital Cabinet" and other UNDP projects, and assisting in the creation of new AI-driven project concepts and resource mobilization strategies. The volunteer will gain practical experience at the intersection of AI, digital government, and sustainable development, contributing to an innovative public-sector digital transformation effort. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, government counterparts, and other partners is integral to this role.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the identification and assessment of AI and data analytics opportunities across UNDP programmes, including the Akim’s Digital Cabinet. Key tasks include documenting practical AI use cases for public administration, planning, monitoring, and decision-making. The role involves contributing to the analysis of data, development, and testing of AI-enabled prototypes. Researching international practices and emerging AI technologies for development challenges in Kazakhstan is also required. The volunteer will contribute to the responsible application of AI, considering data quality, transparency, privacy, security, and potential bias. Engagement in consultations with stakeholders, support for resource mobilization for AI initiatives, and preparation of project concepts and proposals are essential. Documenting requirements, results, and lessons learned, along with supporting knowledge-sharing and capacity-building activities on AI and digital transformation, are also part of the responsibilities.
Work Experience
While no prior professional experience is strictly required, a demonstrated interest and/or experience in Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, data science, data analytics, or digital transformation is beneficial. Experience applying AI or data-driven approaches to practical problems through academic projects, internships, or volunteering is valued.
