Organizational Context

The World Food Programme (WFP) is a United Nations agency focused on fighting hunger and promoting food security globally. Operating in Benin since 1964, WFP supports the government's efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, aligning its 2024-2027 Country Strategic Plan with national priorities and UN development cooperation frameworks. Current interventions address shock preparedness, resilience building, integrated school feeding, nutrition, and capacity strengthening, aiming to meet the multidimensional needs of vulnerable populations.

Job Purpose

This role supports WFP's integrated program implementation in Benin, focusing on improving food security and nutrition for children and communities. The Community UN Volunteer will assist WFP country office teams by providing support for community-level activities, facilitating community mobilization, and liaising with local partners. Key areas of focus include shock preparedness, resilience (supporting smallholder farmers, energy, climate change), integrated school feeding, nutrition, and capacity building. The assignment integrates cross-cutting issues such as gender, protection, accountability, environmental preservation, energy, and innovation, contributing to the overall well-being of vulnerable groups.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the WFP Field Office Head, the Community UN Volunteer will be responsible for: Community Mobilization: Organizing and leading community meetings, raising awareness about activity objectives, and encouraging active participation. School Feeding Support: Collaborating with schools to effectively implement supplementary activities for school meal programs, assisting with menu planning and food stock management. Nutrition Promotion: Overseeing the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of behavior change communication campaigns for local food promotion and nutritional practices in households and schools. Promoting dietary diversification and consumption of locally produced nutritious foods. Resilience Building: Supporting community awareness on resilience activities, particularly food assistance for asset creation. Strengthening community mobilization for resilience initiatives and assisting in participatory community planning. Documenting best practices and success stories. Capacity Building: Training community members on identified WFP program themes. Monitoring and Evaluation: Collecting activity implementation data, monitoring progress, and providing regular reports. Partner Coordination: Collaborating with local organizations, government services, and other partners for smooth program implementation. Gender, Protection, Accountability: Ensuring adherence to gender and protection principles for beneficiaries and supporting accountability processes.

Work Experience

No prior experience is required. However, at least 2 years of experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring communication and community engagement activities are required. Experience in community mobilization, group facilitation, community development, nutrition, agriculture, or development project implementation is an asset. Previous volunteer experience with a UN organization is highly appreciated. Residency within the department or commune of assignment is mandatory.

Skills

Key competencies include integrity, teamwork, respect for diversity, continuous learning, planning and organization, effective problem-solving, and strong communication skills (interpersonal, written, and oral). Flexibility to adapt to challenging living and working conditions is important. The role requires multidisciplinary capabilities. Specific technical skills include community development, communication, advocacy, public information, emergency preparedness, and crisis response.
