Community Midwife
Organizational Context
UNFPA has been active in Yemen since the early 1970s, shifting its focus to humanitarian response following a Level 3 emergency declaration. The agency works with local partners and UN entities to meet reproductive health needs, protect women and girls from gender-based violence, and ensure every pregnancy is wanted and every childbirth is safe. In Yemen's conflict-affected environment, community-level healthcare delivery is crucial to bridge gaps between vulnerable populations and emergency medical services.
Job Purpose
This role contributes to maintaining and expanding essential reproductive health (RH) services for displaced and vulnerable women and girls in Yemen. The Community Midwife will provide skilled RH and maternal/newborn care at the community level, identify complications, facilitate timely referrals, and conduct health education. The position aims to improve access to RH services, support continuity of care during emergencies, and identify barriers to access, including facilitating referrals to Cash and Voucher Assistance mechanisms. The role emphasizes safe, culturally aligned maternal care within native settings, ensuring localized health mobilization and linkage to medical facilities.
Responsibilities
Provide skilled community-level reproductive health (RH), maternal, and newborn services, including ANC, PNC, and family planning counselling and services. Identify and manage uncomplicated conditions within scope, and recognize complications requiring higher-level care, facilitating timely referrals to designated facilities. Conduct community outreach and health education on birth preparedness, complication readiness, care-seeking, and healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies. Support access to essential RH commodities and supplies, monitoring availability and reporting stock-outs. Identify financial, geographic, and other barriers to accessing RH services and facilitate referrals to Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) mechanisms. Contribute to community-level RH information and humanitarian needs monitoring, supporting service continuity during emergencies. Maintain accurate records, report service utilization and referral data, and document service interruptions and access barriers. Adhere to national clinical protocols, UNFPA technical standards, infection prevention measures, and safeguarding policies, respecting confidentiality, dignity, and non-discrimination.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required. Desirable experience includes community midwifery, public health volunteering, or grassroots medical mobilization. Experience in community outreach, health education, and clinical exposure in reproductive health settings is beneficial. Familiarity with local cultural contexts and social structures is advantageous. A recognized midwife qualification and valid professional registration in Yemen are necessary.
