Organizational Context

The UNICEF Office for the Eastern Caribbean Area operates across 12 countries and territories, with its main office in Barbados. UNICEF collaborates with governments and partners to uphold the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ensuring children can reach their full potential. This assignment supports the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) in Trinidad and Tobago, a global UNICEF program empowering local governments to implement child rights at the local level.

Job Purpose

This online volunteer assignment supports UNICEF's Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) in Trinidad and Tobago. The volunteer will transform existing Situational Analysis and Action Plan documents into engaging, visually appealing, and accessible publications. These documents are crucial for advocacy, planning, and accountability, aimed at informing local and national decision-makers, partners, communities, and children. The goal is to enhance the visibility and impact of the CFCI process by creating professional, editable documents with supporting infographics that clearly communicate key findings and commitments to a broad audience.

Responsibilities

The Online Volunteer will be responsible for the graphic design, layout, and production of two key publications: a main report (approx. 100 pages) combining the Situation Analysis and Action Plan, and a child-friendly version (approx. 10 pages) simplifying key findings for children. This involves developing a design concept aligned with UNICEF branding, formatting the publications for professional presentation and readability, and designing visual elements like cover pages and section dividers. The volunteer will create approximately 16 charts, infographics, and diagrams from provided data, and visually represent the Action Plan using tools like timelines or roadmaps. Responsibilities also include sourcing/creating visual assets, applying accessibility best practices, and collaborating with the UNICEF Programme Specialist for revisions and feedback across three review rounds, ensuring final deliverables meet publication standards.

Work Experience

A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in designing publications, reports, or long-form documents is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word for editable documents and at least one professional design tool (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva) is necessary. Proven ability to create clear infographics and charts from complex data, and experience adhering to brand guidelines are also essential.

Skills

Key skills include graphic design, layout, and production of publications. Proficiency in data visualization, creating infographics, charts, and diagrams is crucial. The ability to work with Microsoft Word and professional design software is required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the capacity to incorporate feedback and meet deadlines are important. Experience with UN reports and knowledge of communication, advocacy, and public information are considered assets.
