Translation and Proofreading of First Responder Training from English to Spanish
Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) Training and Development Section manages the UN Security Management System (UNSMS) First Responders Programme. This programme aims to enhance the capacity of UN personnel to provide immediate life-saving assistance in emergencies, especially where professional medical help may be delayed. UNDSS is committed to enabling UN system operations through reliable security leadership and solutions, coordinating field safety, managing security at conferences, and analyzing threats.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UNDSS Training and Development Section in making its updated Individual First Aid Kit First Responder Course (IFAK 2.1) materials accessible globally. The Online Volunteer will translate and proofread these critical training materials from English into Spanish. The purpose is to ensure accurate and consistent technical terminology in first aid, trauma management, and emergency response, enabling wider access to standardized, life-saving training for UN personnel across diverse operational environments. This contribution directly supports the UN's mission to provide effective security leadership and solutions.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will translate approximately 30,000 words of IFAK 2.1 training materials (Instructor's Guide, Participant's Guide, presentations, assessments, Field Guide) from English to Spanish. Responsibilities include ensuring accurate meaning and intent, linguistic accuracy, grammar, readability, and consistency. The volunteer must maintain consistent translation of technical terminology related to first aid, trauma, emergency response, and training. Content must be clear and appropriate for a UN audience, with original structure and formatting preserved where possible. The volunteer will identify and clarify terminology issues with the UNDSS team and incorporate revisions. One volunteer will focus on initial translation, the other on proofreading and quality assurance, with coordination as needed.
Work Experience
While not strictly required, previous experience in translation and/or proofreading is highly desirable. Experience with training, medical, first aid, emergency response, humanitarian, or security-related technical materials is a strong asset. Familiarity with UN terminology and multilingual training materials is also advantageous.
Skills
Essential skills include excellent written proficiency in Spanish (native level) and a strong command of English. Desirable skills include attention to detail, accuracy, consistency in terminology, and the ability to work collaboratively and meet deadlines. Experience in translation, proofreading, and familiarity with technical materials in first aid, emergency response, or security are highly valued.
