Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) aims to enable UN system operations through trusted security leadership and solutions. The Training and Development Section manages the UNSMS First Responders Programme, which enhances personnel capacity to provide immediate life-saving assistance in emergencies, especially where professional medical help may be delayed. This programme utilizes standardized training materials for consistent delivery across the UN.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UNDSS Training and Development Section in making its updated Individual First Aid Kit First Responder Course (IFAK 2.1) materials accessible globally. The Online Volunteers will translate and proofread these critical training materials from English to French. The purpose is to ensure accurate and consistent technical terminology in first aid, trauma management, and emergency response, enabling wider access to standardized, life-saving training for UN personnel in diverse operational environments. This contributes to strengthening the UN's capacity to respond effectively to emergencies.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteers will translate and proofread approximately 30,000 words of the IFAK 2.1 training package, including guides, session plans, presentations, and supporting materials. Key duties involve accurately translating content from English to French, ensuring the meaning and intent are preserved. Volunteers will review translated materials for linguistic accuracy, grammar, readability, and consistency, paying close attention to first aid, trauma, and emergency response terminology. They will ensure the translated content is clear and suitable for a UN audience, maintaining the original structure and formatting where possible. Volunteers will also identify and clarify any ambiguous terminology and incorporate revisions. One volunteer will focus on initial translation, while the other will concentrate on proofreading and quality assurance, coordinating as needed.
Work Experience
Candidates require excellent written proficiency in French (native language) and a strong command of English (fluent). Previous experience in translation and/or proofreading is highly desirable. Experience with technical materials such as training, medical, first aid, emergency response, humanitarian, or security content is a strong asset. Familiarity with UN terminology and multilingual training materials is advantageous.
Skills
Key skills include excellent written French and fluent English. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency in terminology are essential. The ability to work collaboratively and meet deadlines is required. Experience in translation, proofreading, and familiarity with technical subject matter (first aid, emergency response) are highly desirable.
