Organizational Context

UNICEF has been active in Djibouti since 1981, working to protect children's rights and potential. The Obock region faces a significant influx of Yemeni refugees, requiring enhanced humanitarian response. Priority needs include access to safe water, emergency sanitation, hygiene promotion, solid waste management, and community mobilization in refugee sites and host communities. This role supports critical WASH interventions in a challenging environment.

Job Purpose

The Community WASH Volunteer will support daily emergency WASH activities in the Obock region, focusing on Yemeni refugees and affected host communities. Under supervision, the volunteer will collect field information, promote hygiene practices, and engage communities to ensure access to safe water and sanitation. This role is designed for a junior profile motivated by proximity work, capable of executing simple tasks. The volunteer will contribute to monitoring water points, sanitation facilities, and waste management, reporting issues, and supporting hygiene awareness campaigns, directly impacting the well-being of vulnerable populations in an emergency setting.

Responsibilities

The Community WASH Volunteer will work under the supervision of the UNICEF WASH Officer, collaborating with local authorities, partners, and community representatives. Key duties include: Water Supply Monitoring: Conduct regular visits to water points, record usage data, observe collection conditions, report malfunctions or contamination risks, and promote rational water use. Support community water management committees. Sanitation and Waste Management: Monitor the functionality and cleanliness of latrines and hygiene facilities, report maintenance needs, identify risks associated with poor sanitation, and support community clean-up activities. Hygiene Promotion and Community Mobilization: Participate in hygiene awareness sessions, disseminate validated messages, support community outreach, assist in distributing hygiene kits, and encourage participation from all community groups. Collect and relay community feedback on WASH services. Data Collection and Reporting: Complete simple tracking forms, participate in field assessments, provide daily/weekly updates, and document activities and observed issues while respecting confidentiality. General Support: Attend operational meetings, assist with equipment checks, guide communities to available services, and adhere to safety, humanitarian, and child safeguarding principles.

Work Experience

No extensive professional experience is required. A brief prior experience (0-1 year) in areas like internships, volunteering, community mobilization, or associative activities is an asset. Previous exposure to WASH, humanitarian, health, or community-based initiatives is beneficial but not mandatory. Familiarity with the Obock region and local communities is advantageous.

Skills

Essential skills include strong communication and listening abilities, adaptability, teamwork, responsibility, integrity, and a commitment to volunteerism. The volunteer must be able to work in the field, follow instructions, use basic digital tools for data collection, and demonstrate respect for diversity. Proficiency in French is required, with working knowledge of Afar, Somali, or Arabic being desirable.
