Volontaire communautaire Santé et Nutrition
Organizational Context
UNICEF has been active in Djibouti since 1981, working with partners to improve the future for children. The Obock region, a transit and reception area, faces significant population mobility and challenges accessing essential services. An influx of Yemeni refugees exacerbates the need for information, guidance, prevention, screening, referral, and community-based follow-up, supplementing existing service capacities.
Job Purpose
This assignment aims to strengthen operational links between affected communities, health facilities, mobile teams, and humanitarian partners in Obock. The volunteer will identify needs, facilitate access to health and nutrition services, and ensure regular reporting of data, alerts, and community feedback to the UNICEF Health-Nutrition team. The role requires regular household visits, close collaboration with local authorities and partners, and strict adherence to humanitarian principles, child protection, confidentiality, and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Responsibilities
Key duties include community mobilization and information dissemination on available services, vaccination, maternal and child health, nutrition, and hygiene. The volunteer will identify needs through household visits and mapping, screen for acute malnutrition, and refer individuals to appropriate services. They will also verify vaccination status, identify unvaccinated children, and support follow-up. Reporting health or nutrition alerts, unusual deaths, or service disruptions is crucial. The role involves collecting community feedback, tracking referrals, maintaining data collection tools, compiling data, and submitting weekly reports. Coordination with health services, local authorities, and partner organizations is essential, alongside strict adherence to protection, child safeguarding, and non-discrimination principles.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required. However, at least one year of relevant experience in community mobilization, health, nutrition, social work, or humanitarian response is desirable. Familiarity with the Obock region, its communities, and socio-cultural context is beneficial. Experience with refugees, migrants, mobile populations, or vulnerable communities is a plus.
Skills
Required competencies include responsibility, integrity, respect for diversity, cultural sensitivity, adaptability, flexibility, communication, active listening, planning, organization, professionalism, teamwork, self-management, community and results orientation, discretion, and confidentiality. Technical skills include community development, emergency preparedness, crisis response, public health, and immunization.
