Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) leads global public health efforts, aiming to promote health, ensure safety, and serve vulnerable populations through partnerships. In Egypt, WHO, supported by an Islamic Organization partner (IoP) award, is enhancing the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of healthcare facilities. This initiative aligns with national efforts and regional climate and health programs, focusing on energy, water, sanitation, waste management, infrastructure, and workforce readiness.

Job Purpose

This UN Volunteer assignment supports WHO's initiative in Egypt to bolster the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of healthcare facilities. The role involves applying WHO guidance to selected facilities, addressing key areas like energy, water, sanitation, waste, infrastructure, and workforce preparedness. The volunteer will contribute significantly to facility-level resilience improvements under the IoP award (approximately 70% of time) and support related activities within the Climate Change, Health and Environment (CHE) Unit (approximately 30% of time), complementing national and regional climate and health programs.

Responsibilities

The UN Volunteer will support baseline assessments of healthcare facilities against WHO guidance, including data collection and quality checks. Responsibilities include assisting in the development of facility-level resilience improvement plans, coordinating and implementing the workplan, and managing tracking tools and documentation systems. The role involves organizing technical meetings, workshops, and training sessions for facility managers and national counterparts. Additionally, the volunteer will support the preparation of technical documents and progress reports for WHO, national authorities, and donors. Collaboration with facility representatives and stakeholders is key. A portion of the time will be dedicated to supporting the CHE Unit's activities, such as the national health vulnerability and adaptation assessment and climate-resilient WASH and air quality initiatives.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant experience at the national or international level is required in environmental health, public health, health facility assessment, or health infrastructure. Experience with climate resilience, energy, water, or healthcare waste in health facilities is advantageous. Familiarity with WHO guidance on climate-resilient facilities or similar assessment tools is highly desirable. Proficiency in data analysis and presentation, along with strong English and Arabic language skills, is essential.

Skills

Key competencies include accountability, adaptability, commitment to learning, communication, ethics, integrity, planning, organization, professionalism, respect for diversity, and teamwork. Technical expertise in public health, climate change, environmental health, engineering, or construction is valuable. Strong analytical, reporting, and interpersonal skills are necessary for effective collaboration and project implementation.
