Remote Research Support: Green Hydrogen and Its Application in Lebanon
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's lead agency for international development, working in 170 countries to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. UNDP focuses on sustainable development, democratic governance, and climate and disaster resilience. In Lebanon, UNDP is addressing the prolonged electricity crisis and exploring alternative energy pathways, including green hydrogen, to diversify energy supply, reduce emissions, and enhance energy resilience. This initiative supports applied research to inform national climate action and renewable energy strategies.
Job Purpose
This role supports UNDP Lebanon's applied research on green hydrogen by developing a comprehensive presentation. The presentation will explain green hydrogen concepts, production methods, applications, and its environmental, economic, and social advantages and disadvantages. It will also assess Lebanon's specific context, including its electricity system, water availability, and renewable energy resources, to determine the feasibility of green hydrogen. The ultimate goal is to translate complex technical information into a clear, visual resource for the project team, strengthening the evidence base for renewable energy diversification and informing strategic planning for Lebanon's energy and climate future.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will develop a PowerPoint presentation on green hydrogen and its relevance to Lebanon. Key responsibilities include researching and explaining green hydrogen concepts, production methods (electrolysis powered by renewables), and its differentiation from other hydrogen types. The volunteer will investigate green hydrogen's main applications (e.g., transportation, industry, storage) and compare it to alternatives. They will identify and articulate the environmental, economic, and social advantages and disadvantages, including production costs and benchmarking against global figures. Furthermore, the volunteer will analyze Lebanon's electricity system, water availability, and renewable energy resources (solar, wind) for hydrogen feasibility, assess potential benefits and barriers for Lebanon, and draft evidence-based recommendations, considering the role of chemical engineering in solutions.
Work Experience
The primary requirement is proven experience in applied research and the ability to communicate findings clearly through presentations. While no prior professional experience is mandatory, a basic knowledge of or demonstrated interest in renewable energy, green hydrogen, or energy systems is expected. Attention to detail is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of research and data.
Skills
Key skills include strong applied research capabilities, excellent presentation and technical communication abilities, and attention to detail for data accuracy. The volunteer should possess the ability to translate complex scientific or technical information into accessible content. A demonstrated interest in chemistry, engineering, sustainability, and renewable energy or energy systems is highly valued.
