The World Food Programme (WFP) operates in over 120 countries, delivering life-saving food assistance and implementing solutions to build better futures. This position is within the UNHAS (United Nations Humanitarian Air Service) in the WFP Madagascar Country Office, supporting humanitarian aid delivery through safe and efficient air services.
Job Purpose
The Aviation Officer will support the provision of safe and efficient air services for the humanitarian aid community in Madagascar. Reporting to the Deputy CATO or CATO, the role involves carrying out and supervising coordination, administrative, and technical tasks. This includes contributing to the planning and coordination of aviation operations in line with WFP and UN Aviation Standards, supporting aviation projects, and managing operational risk. The officer will liaise with authorities for necessary approvals, analyze data to improve performance, and contribute to reporting. Capacity building for staff and partners on aviation safety is also a key function, alongside fostering productive relationships within the team and preparing for emergency aviation response.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will contribute to planning and coordinating safe aviation operations according to WFP and UN Aviation Standards. They will support aviation projects and operational activities, applying standard processes and risk management for effective humanitarian air transportation. Responsibilities include liaising with airport and local authorities for operational approvals, collecting and analyzing data to recommend performance improvements, and participating in the review of internal processes for efficiency gains. The role involves collating data for accurate reporting to support decision-making and donor relations. Additionally, the volunteer will support capacity building for WFP staff and partners on aviation safety, build productive relationships within the unit, and follow emergency aviation preparedness practices for rapid response, including passenger services, relief supplies, and evacuations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required. This includes experience with aviation safety information systems for data compilation and risk analysis, arranging flight clearances and immigration documentation, coordinating with national aviation authorities on ramp activities, and monitoring operational reports to advise on service utilization. Experience or knowledge in drone operation is considered an added advantage.

The role requires the ability to design supply chain networks, forecast operational needs, liaise with stakeholders, negotiate contracts, enforce quality standards, and utilize air transport networks safely and securely. Proficiency in French (fluent) and English (working knowledge) is also necessary.
