Human Rights Associate
Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) aims to protect human rights for all, empower individuals to realize their rights, and assist duty-bearers in upholding these rights. The OHCHR Country Office in Yemen monitors and documents human rights and humanitarian law violations, conducts advocacy, provides technical assistance, and supports Yemen in meeting its international human rights obligations. It collaborates with national authorities, civil society, and other actors to promote and protect human rights within the operating environment.
Job Purpose
The Human Rights Associate will support the OHCHR Country Office in Yemen in its mission to protect and promote human rights. This role involves monitoring and documenting human rights and humanitarian law violations, contributing to reporting and advocacy efforts, and assisting in capacity-building initiatives. The Associate will play a key part in the office's engagement with humanitarian action, including participation in coordination mechanisms and supporting the UN Cooperation Framework. The position requires contributing to the analysis of civilian casualties and supporting Yemen's fulfillment of its international human rights obligations through cooperation with various stakeholders. The assignment aims to strengthen the OHCHR's presence and impact in a challenging environment.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Team Leader and Representative, the Human Rights Associate will monitor, document, and report on human rights violations. This includes leading the office's work on minority rights and human rights in humanitarian action, participating in the Protection Cluster and other coordination mechanisms, and contributing to the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP). The Associate will support the UN Cooperation Framework and civilian casualty monitoring. Key tasks involve assisting in drafting periodic reports, briefing notes, background papers, and meeting summaries. The role also includes supporting the organization of capacity-building activities like workshops and seminars, and preparing presentations and communication materials. Basic data management and conducting field visits as required are also part of the responsibilities. A work plan will be developed in the first month to outline objectives and activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience is required in areas such as human rights, protection, monitoring and documentation, research, or reporting. Proficiency in human rights knowledge, strong analytical and drafting skills, research capabilities, and excellent written and oral communication are essential. Solid computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite, email, and internet usage, is also necessary.
