Job Purpose
UN Women, guided by the UN Charter's vision of equality, strives to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve gender equality as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, peace, and security. Placing women's rights at its core, UN Women leads and coordinates UN system efforts to translate gender equality commitments into global action. It provides substantive leadership to support Member States' priorities, fostering effective partnerships with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders. The Communications Assistant will directly support the Communication Associate in formulating and implementing UN Women Guatemala's communication strategy to enhance visibility. This role will also assist in the effective execution of project communication plans, promoting a client-oriented approach to ensure the organization's impactful work is widely recognized.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Communication Associate, the Communications Assistant will contribute to developing and implementing a coherent communication and promotion strategy for the Country Office. This includes providing contextual information, offering logistical support for advocacy efforts and campaigns, and assisting with press conferences and informational materials. The assistant will manage media, digital communication, and social media presence by gathering information, producing graphic content for the website and social media, and ensuring timely updates. Responsibilities also involve maintaining digital archives, supporting the design of promotional materials, collecting success stories, and drafting press releases, articles, and key messages. Support for media relations includes maintaining a media database, responding to information requests, compiling talking points, and assisting with photography and video recording at events promoting gender equality. The role also facilitates knowledge management and information exchange by identifying best practices, organizing communication workshops, and sharing information with Headquarters and the Regional Office. Furthermore, the assistant will operationalize the production and dissemination of communication materials for UN Women-Guatemala, reviewing translations, coordinating with vendors for promotional material production, and maintaining a library of reference materials and photographs, all while adhering to organizational guidelines. The incumbent will also perform other duties as required for efficient office operations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of general experience is required, including developing graphic materials and supporting internal or external communication strategies. Experience in social media management, digital communication, and proficiency in office software (MS Word, Excel) and web-based management systems is essential. Experience in communication for development, particularly creating graphic and audiovisual material related to human rights, gender, Agenda 2030, or preventing violence against women, is highly valued.
