The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports sustainable agri-food systems to improve nutrition, environment, and livelihoods. The Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA), hosted by FAO, engages youth in sustainable development through educational activities and Challenge Badges. This initiative aims to make YUNGA resources accessible in Chinese, fostering global understanding and action on sustainability challenges among Chinese-speaking youth.
Job Purpose
This role involves translating YUNGA's website content and six Challenge Badges from English to Chinese. The purpose is to make these educational resources on sustainable development and SDGs accessible to a broader Chinese-speaking audience. By ensuring accurate and culturally relevant translations, the volunteer will help schools, youth groups, and educators engage young people in understanding global sustainability issues and identifying local actions. This contribution supports YUNGA's multilingual outreach and advances progress towards multiple Sustainable Development Goals, removing language barriers to youth participation.
Responsibilities
Translate the content of the Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) website (approx. 10 pages) and five YUNGA Challenge Badges into Chinese. Ensure translations are concise, adhere to FAO communication guidelines, and are appropriate for the target audience. Specific documents include the Green Cities Badge (110 pages), Pollinators Badge (170 pages), Energy Badge (100 pages), and Food Loss and Waste Badge (90 pages). The workload will be divided among six volunteers, with specific allocations determined at the assignment's start. Guidance on audience and communication standards will be provided.
Work Experience
Candidates must be native Chinese speakers and fluent in English. Familiarity with technical terms related to education, sustainable development, and the environment is advantageous. Previous translation experience is considered a plus. A translation test will be part of the selection process.
Skills
Native proficiency in Chinese and fluency in English are essential. Familiarity with terminology in education, sustainable development, and environmental fields is beneficial. Strong translation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adhere to communication guidelines are required. Understanding of UN/FAO communication standards is an asset.
