Organizational Context

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA), based in Beirut, is the leading UN entity for human rights. It promotes and protects all human rights across eleven countries in the region. The office advocates for vulnerable groups, provides technical advice to governments on human rights treaties and institutions, and designs training modules for various stakeholders. It also monitors the human rights situation, contributes to global reports, and raises awareness.

Job Purpose

This online volunteer assignment supports the OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) in its monitoring and reporting efforts. The volunteer will conduct open-source research on human rights violations, analyze information from publicly available sources including social media, and prepare concise weekly summaries of key findings and trends. This role is crucial for identifying, analyzing, and addressing emerging human rights challenges in the region. The assignment offers a valuable opportunity to enhance skills in human rights monitoring, analysis, and reporting, contributing directly to the office's capacity-building mandate and its work in safeguarding human rights across the region.

Responsibilities

Conduct open-source research on assigned human rights topics or incidents using publicly available information. Prepare short weekly summaries (1-2 pages) highlighting key findings, trends, and sources. Collaborate closely with legal reporting officers, desk officers, thematic advisors, and the Public Information Officer. Analyze social media feeds and other open-source platforms for information gathering. Synthesize large volumes of information using qualitative research methods. Contribute to the office's capacity-building mandate by supporting monitoring, reporting, and project implementation. Assist in identifying, analyzing, and addressing emerging human rights challenges in the region. Support the promotion and protection of all human rights for all people within the mandate of OHCHR.

Work Experience

Experience analyzing social media feeds and other open-source platforms for information gathering is required. Proficiency in qualitative research methods and data analysis, including summarizing and synthesizing information, is necessary. Experience in human rights, humanitarian affairs, or crisis management is desirable. Familiarity with creating data visualizations is a plus.

Skills

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with keen attention to detail, are essential. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities is necessary. Persistence, self-management, and the ability to work under pressure are important. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset. Strong public speaking skills in English and Arabic are also noted.
