Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads and partners in environmental care, inspiring nations to improve quality of life without compromising future generations. UNEP monitors planetary health, ensures science guides decisions, and upholds environmental law. Facing unprecedented environmental challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss, UNEP collaborates with 193 Member States and partners to drive transformation. The MARG initiative, a UNEP & IFC collaboration, focuses on advancing green buildings and strengthening the ecosystem, with Working Group 1 dedicated to capacity building.

Job Purpose

This assignment supports Working Group 1 (WG1) of the MARG initiative by systematically mapping existing capacity-building resources, partner capabilities, and relevant expertise. The goal is to understand what resources are available internationally and within India to advance green buildings and strengthen the sector's enabling ecosystem. The mapping will identify existing assets, potential gaps, and underserved areas. The output will provide WG1 with a consolidated evidence base to inform decisions on adopting, adapting, scaling, or linking existing resources, and to identify needs for new capacity-building interventions. This contributes to advancing sustainable and environmentally responsible development in the building sector.

Responsibilities

The Online Volunteer will develop a structured mapping of capacity-building resources and partner capabilities for the MARG Green Buildings initiative's Working Group 1. Key duties include creating a mapping framework and data template, identifying partner contributions (expertise, training, tools), cataloguing existing toolkits and programmes relevant to green buildings and capacity development, and mapping effective Indian and international capacity-building examples. The volunteer will also identify and catalogue useful templates for Training Needs Assessment, Training-of-Trainers, curricula, and Monitoring & Evaluation. Mapping of training modules by target constituency, theme, and complexity, along with the geographic reach and target constituencies of partners and resources, is required. The role involves identifying under-served areas and assessing the relevance of identified resources for WG1 activities. Finally, the volunteer will consolidate findings into a searchable matrix and an analytical summary highlighting key assets, gaps, and opportunities.

Work Experience

Candidates require strong research, desk-review, and information-mapping skills, with the ability to systematically identify, assess, and organize information from multiple sources. Experience with databases, mapping matrices, or structured information repositories is beneficial. Familiarity with green buildings, sustainable construction, or capacity-building programmes is desirable.

Skills

Essential skills include strong desk research and information-gathering abilities, proficiency in categorizing and synthesizing information, and competence in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail are crucial. The ability to distinguish between general information and practical capacity-building tools is important. Good written and verbal English communication is required. Familiarity with modern AI tools is also noted. Desirable skills include knowledge of green buildings, development sector experience, and familiarity with training needs assessments and M&E frameworks.
