Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads global efforts to care for the environment, inspiring nations and peoples to improve quality of life without compromising future generations. UNEP monitors planetary health, ensures science guides decision-making, and upholds environmental rule of law. In partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), UNEP supports sustainable development through the MARG initiative, which aims to advance green buildings and strengthen the enabling ecosystem.

Job Purpose

This role supports the initial data-building phase for the MARG Green Buildings Repository, a collaborative platform between UNEP and IFC. The repository will provide structured access to information on green-building projects. The Online Volunteer will be instrumental in developing a reliable initial project database by identifying relevant projects, collecting and structuring project data, verifying information, and preparing the dataset for integration into the MARG digital repository. This foundational work will enable future expansion through direct contributions from partners and project owners.

Responsibilities

The Online Volunteer will support the mapping and curation of projects for the MARG Green Buildings Project Repository. Key duties include understanding the MARG project-data structure, developing data collection templates, identifying relevant green-building projects from various sources, and conducting desk research to gather project information. The volunteer will record project details such as name, location, implementing entity, type, characteristics, status, and scale, ensuring accuracy by cross-checking sources. Responsibilities also involve identifying and flagging inconsistencies, duplicates, or missing information, applying data quality criteria, and maintaining source references. The final deliverable is a structured, quality-checked dataset ready for integration into the MARG repository.

Work Experience

Candidates should possess strong desk-research, information-gathering, and data-organization skills. Experience in identifying relevant projects from multiple sources and systematically capturing and verifying information is required. Desirable experience includes familiarity with green buildings, sustainable construction, database creation, market research, or data curation.

Skills

Required skills include strong desk research and online information-gathering abilities, proficiency with Excel or Google Sheets, and the capacity to collect, structure, and organize information according to defined fields. A keen attention to detail for identifying inconsistencies and duplicates, the ability to assess information reliability, strong analytical and organizational skills, and good written and verbal English communication are essential.
