Organizational Context

UNICEF's mission is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, focusing on equity for the most disadvantaged. In Italy, UNICEF's program, established in 2016, initially responded to the influx of unaccompanied minors. Since 2020, it has supported the Italian government in establishing the European Child Guarantee, piloting innovative approaches to reach disadvantaged children and adolescents. The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) model was piloted in 2021 to ensure meaningful youth participation in the Child Guarantee initiative.

Job Purpose

This UNV assignment supports the scaling of UNICEF's youth engagement model in Italy, specifically focusing on strengthening the national Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and establishing six local YABs. The role involves collaborating with national and local authorities, civil society, and the private sector to foster youth participation and develop their skills. The ultimate goal is to contribute to reducing child poverty and social exclusion by empowering adolescents and young people, promoting their engagement, and creating opportunities for their development, ensuring the sustainability of the YAB model.

Responsibilities

The Local YAB Coordinator will strengthen youth participation at local and regional levels, working in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, local municipalities, and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing local outreach strategies, identifying and engaging young people and local partners, and holding information sessions. The coordinator will draft and oversee the implementation of a Local Workplan, map existing youth participation mechanisms, and define local youth priorities. They will facilitate dialogue between YAB members and institutions, support the preparation and running of local and regional meetings, and help formalize local collaborations. Operational support will be provided for training, workshops, advocacy messages, awareness-raising initiatives, and documentation of best practices. Networking with public and private stakeholders and integrating YAB recommendations into municipal planning are also crucial. The role includes data entry for monitoring, drafting monthly reports, and supporting evaluation activities.

Work Experience

No prior experience is required. However, two years of relevant experience in youth work, social or community development projects, volunteerism, or similar programs is desirable. Proficiency in Italian (oral and written) is essential, along with strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively with diverse groups. Computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office, and the ability to work independently and in a multicultural team are necessary.

Skills

Key competencies include accountability, adaptability, flexibility, creativity, judgment, decision-making, planning, organizing, professionalism, and self-management. Specific expertise areas include art, design, culture, volunteer management, advocacy, and youth engagement. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work effectively in complex and multicultural environments are also vital.
