Interpretation of UNHCR Global Consultations with NGOs (English/French)

Established in 1950, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a global entity dedicated to protecting refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals. UNHCR prioritizes safeguarding the rights and well-being of those forced to flee. The organization recognizes the crucial role of refugee-led and community-based organizations as first responders and emphasizes strengthening engagement with these actors. The 2026 Global Consultations with NGOs, co-organized with ICVA, will focus on safeguarding asylum rights and strengthening protection.
Job Purpose
This role supports the 2026 UNHCR Global Consultations with NGOs by providing real-time interpretation between English and French. The aim is to ensure meaningful participation of French-speaking participants alongside English speakers. The interpretation will facilitate communication during the opening plenary, methodology sessions, thematic discussions, and the closing plenary. By bridging language barriers, the volunteer's contribution will help participants effectively exchange experiences, identify priorities, and develop recommendations to enhance protection and uphold the right to seek asylum. This assignment is crucial for fostering inclusive dialogue and achieving the consultation's objectives.
Responsibilities
Provide accurate, impartial, and protection-sensitive real-time interpretation between English and French during the 2026 UNHCR Global Consultations with NGOs. Attend a pre-assignment briefing, review provided materials including glossaries, and complete onboarding procedures, including signing a Confidentiality Undertaking and Code of Conduct. Participate in a technical test and interpretation rehearsal. Familiarize yourself with terminology related to refugee protection, asylum, statelessness, forced displacement, and civil society engagement. Join assigned sessions in advance for technical and coordination checks. Coordinate effectively with a partner interpreter, adhering to agreed handover arrangements. Promptly report any technical, connectivity, audibility, or terminology issues that may impact interpretation. Provide brief feedback after completing assigned sessions. Ensure smooth communication flow to support the meaningful participation of all stakeholders.
Work Experience
While not strictly required, familiarity with technical terms related to refugees, civil society, and international organizations is advantageous. Previous interpretation and translation experience is considered an asset. Candidates must be fluent in English and French.
