The Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean, through its Gender, Environment, and Climate Justice Hub, focuses on integrating gender perspectives into environmental and climate policies across Latin America and the Caribbean, aiming for more just and effective climate action.
Job Purpose
This role supports UN Women's Regional Hub by translating and reviewing technical documents on gender and climate change from Spanish to Portuguese. The assignment aims to facilitate the international dissemination of knowledge products that analyze gender gaps and opportunities in climate change policies. The volunteer will contribute to strengthening institutional capacities and evidence generation for more equitable climate action in the region by ensuring accurate and high-quality translations that maintain conceptual precision, terminological consistency, and institutional language appropriateness.
Responsibilities
The volunteer will translate and review six technical documents on gender and climate change policies from Spanish to Portuguese. Working collaboratively in pairs, each volunteer will translate three documents and review the other three. The process involves a three-week cycle per document, including translation, cross-review for linguistic and technical accuracy, peer feedback for resolving terminological and conceptual issues, and final adjustments. Volunteers will utilize translation tools, ensuring the final output is conceptually precise, linguistically accurate, terminologically consistent, and adheres to UN Women's institutional language. Special attention will be given to concepts related to gender, climate change, public policy, and sustainable development, ensuring logical organization, clarity, and suitability for institutional use.
Work Experience
Demonstrable experience in translating and reviewing technical, academic, or institutional documents is required. Experience with Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools or AI translation support is desirable. Experience in gender equality, climate change, public policy, sustainable development, or environmental fields is also desirable, as is familiarity with UN terminology.
Skills
Excellent written Spanish and Portuguese language skills. Ability to translate and review complex technical documents accurately, maintaining original meaning and institutional tone. Skill in identifying and resolving terminology, conceptual coherence, style, and linguistic issues. Proficiency in using translation support tools. Knowledge of gender equality, climate change, and sustainable development concepts is beneficial.
