Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator, representing the UN System in Honduras, oversees and coordinates development activities at the country level. Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this assignment is to provide interpretation services between Honduran Sign Language (LESHO) and spoken Spanish during regular and extraordinary meetings of the Youth Advisory Council (CAJ) of the UN System in Honduras. The volunteer will facilitate communication for a deaf member of the council, ensuring their full participation. Additionally, at the end of the assignment, the volunteer will be expected to produce a document detailing lessons learned and recommendations based on their experience, contributing to the improvement of future UN-youth engagement initiatives.
Responsibilities
The volunteer will interpret for the UN System's Youth Advisory Council (CAJ) in Honduras, a group of 15 young people advising the UN on integrating youth perspectives. This involves providing real-time interpretation of Honduran Sign Language (LESHO) during bi-monthly 1.5-hour ordinary meetings (twice a month) and one additional 1-hour monthly meeting for a working commission. These sessions focus on coordinating the implementation of the group's work plan. The interpreter will ensure effective communication for a council member who uses LESHO, enabling their active participation in discussions and decision-making processes. The role requires participation in scheduled meetings, which occur on specific Thursdays and a variable day for commission work, primarily in the evenings.
Work Experience
Required experience includes proven advanced knowledge of Honduran Sign Language (LESHO) and practical experience in real-time LESHO interpretation, whether in-person or virtual. Familiarity with and proficiency in using virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet is also necessary.
