Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) leads global efforts to accelerate disaster risk reduction, aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Sustainable Development Goals. UNDRR's vision is a world resilient to disaster risks. The office supports the implementation of the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative, aiming to protect everyone with early warning systems by 2027, coordinating efforts with key partners like WMO, ITU, and IFRC.
Job Purpose
The Project Coordinator will provide leadership, coordination, and quality assurance for the implementation of disaster risk reduction projects across Latin America and the Caribbean. This role supports the scaling up of the Sendai Framework and the 'Early Warnings for All' initiative, focusing on disaster preparedness, risk knowledge, and anticipatory action. The coordinator will ensure coherence across subregional activities, align with UNDRR and EW4ALL priorities, and engage with diverse stakeholders including DG-ECHO, UN agencies, and humanitarian actors. The position aims to strengthen regional and national capacities for disaster risk management and enhance coordination among partners.
Responsibilities
The Project Coordinator will lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of project activities, ensuring coherence across subregional workstreams and alignment with project indicators. Responsibilities include coordinating contributions to risk knowledge products such as risk assessment reports and country risk profiles. The role involves serving as a primary liaison with key partners like DG-ECHO, IGOs, and UN agencies, and leading the coordination of the EU-LAC MoU. The coordinator will guide quality assurance for risk assessments, MHEWS assessments, and knowledge products, and provide technical advice on disaster preparedness and early action. Monitoring and reporting on progress, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and leading coordination meetings are also key duties. The role includes guaranteeing project visibility through various communication channels.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in project management is required, with at least five years specifically in disaster risk reduction, humanitarian action, preparedness, or resilience. Proven experience leading multi-country or regional programs is essential. Strong coordination, stakeholder engagement, and excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary. The candidate should demonstrate adaptability, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively in a challenging, multicultural environment.
