Organizational Context

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) operates in the Abyei Area, a strategically vital territory contested by Sudan and South Sudan. This region faces significant political tension, inter-communal conflict, and challenges in security, development, and humanitarian access. UNISFA's mandate is to stabilize and demilitarize the area, protect civilians, foster reconciliation, and facilitate humanitarian assistance, working within a complex operating environment characterized by fragile governance and service delivery.

Job Purpose

This role supports the Strategic Communication and Public Information Office of UNISFA at its headquarters in Abyei. The Public Information Assistant will contribute to enhancing the mission's visibility and public understanding by organizing awareness-raising events, developing promotional materials, and managing outreach activities. The position requires active engagement with local communities and stakeholders to promote UNISFA's mandate and priorities. The incumbent will play a key role in disseminating information, building relationships, and supporting the mission's communication objectives through various media and engagement strategies.

Responsibilities

The Public Information Assistant will plan and organize thematic awareness-raising events using creative methods like drama, music, and sports to promote UNISFA's mandate. This includes conceptualizing outreach plans and producing promotional materials such as posters, banners, and digital content. The role involves organizing events for UN-related International Days and assisting partners with their events. Building and maintaining networks with local officials, traditional leaders, civil society, and media is crucial. Responsibilities also include screening and analyzing local media for monitoring reports, traveling within the mission area to cover stories, and supervising the distribution of print products. Capacity building for local journalists and contributing content for UNISFA's website and social media platforms are key tasks. The assistant will design graphic materials using Adobe Suite and perform administrative functions including procurement and budgeting.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required. This includes experience in translation, community outreach, event management, public relations, and graphic design. Proficiency in MS Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and graphic design software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) is essential. Experience in website management/design and the ability to operate digital recording equipment are also necessary.
