Organizational Context
UNESCO, a specialized UN agency founded in 1946, promotes peace through international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, and communication. It contributes to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This assignment is with the Natural Sciences team in Nairobi, supporting the "Sustainably Unlocking the Economic Potential of Lake Turkana" project. This 10-year program, co-led by UNESCO and WFP, focuses on sustainable resource management, nutrition, and livelihoods in a region facing food and water insecurity.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer will support the implementation of UNESCO's activities, primarily focusing on the "Sustainably Unlocking the Economic Potential of Lake Turkana" project. This involves assisting with project management, logistics, planning, and rollout of activities, including fieldwork, workshops, and stakeholder engagement. A key responsibility will be supporting the Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis (CRIDA) methodology for natural resource management. The role also includes contributing to communication efforts and reporting, aiming to enhance decision-making for sustainable resource management and support conservation efforts in the Lake Turkana region.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Natural Sciences Sector and Coordinator of Water Sciences, the UN Volunteer will support the Lake Turkana project's management and rollout. This includes assisting with the logistics and planning of project activities, fieldwork, data collection, workshops, and stakeholder engagement. The role involves supporting the UNESCO Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis (CRIDA) methodology for natural resource management. Additionally, the volunteer will help create content for communication channels, attend project steering committee meetings, prepare minutes and action plans, support report preparation, and assist with other team projects like flood management and early warning systems.
Work Experience
Requires 1 month of experience, with 6 months of relevant experience preferred. Experience in combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, or working with climate adaptation strategies, climate models, and climate change scenarios for water and natural resources management is desirable.
