Organizational Context
The Asia Pacific Regional Office oversees UNOPS operations across 17 countries, focusing on strategic leadership and operational excellence. The South Asia Multi-Country Office (SAMCO) specifically supports six countries, delivering expertise in climate change, WASH, infrastructure, procurement, and human resource management. This role supports the Vriddhi programme within SAMCO.
Job Purpose
The Translator/Interpreter (Tamil-English) is crucial for the Vriddhi programme, ensuring effective communication and inclusive participation. The role bridges the language gap between English-dominant programme materials and Tamil-speaking civil society partners. By providing accurate written translations and live interpretation for both online and in-person engagements, the incumbent preserves the meaning, tone, confidentiality, and technical accuracy of all programme content, thereby facilitating better understanding and engagement with stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include translating programme documents, reports, learning materials, presentations, and communications between English and Tamil, ensuring accuracy, tone, and audience appropriateness. This involves reviewing and proofreading translations, maintaining consistent terminology, and developing glossaries as needed. The role also requires providing live consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during online meetings, webinars, training sessions, and occasional in-person events. Preparation for interpretation includes reviewing agendas and relevant materials to ensure accurate terminology. The incumbent must maintain confidentiality, respond promptly to requests, meet deadlines, and incorporate feedback, coordinating closely with the Vriddhi focal point.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of professional experience in translation and interpretation is required, including translating technical documents and providing live interpretation in various settings. Demonstrated ability to accurately translate technical content and communicate complex ideas clearly is essential. Knowledge of relevant terminology and strong proofreading skills are necessary. Experience with UN or international organizations is desirable.
