Organizational Context

UNICEF operates in over 190 countries and territories, dedicated to saving children’s lives, defending their rights, and helping them fulfill their potential from early childhood through adolescence. We are committed, passionate, and proud of our work, viewing the promotion of every child's rights not just as a job, but as a calling. UNICEF offers diverse opportunities for professional and personal development, fostering a sense of purpose while serving children and communities globally.

Job Purpose

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in all its endeavors, translating the equity strategy into action by focusing on the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families. This commitment ensures all children have an opportunity to survive, develop, and reach their full potential without discrimination. Investing in the health, education, and protection of disadvantaged citizens not only empowers children but also fosters sustained growth and stability for nations. UNICEF's role as a leading humanitarian and development agency is crucial in addressing Gender Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE), a prerequisite for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and a core element of UNICEF’s gender equality programming. Our response is guided by humanitarian responsibilities and commitments, aiming for a world where girls and women affected by emergencies live free from GBV.

Responsibilities

The Child Protection Officer will support programme development and planning, ensuring alignment with UNICEF's strategic objectives and the equity agenda. This includes contributing to the design, formulation, and management of child protection programmes, with a specific focus on Gender Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) in South Sudan. The role involves programme management, monitoring, and delivery of results, tracking progress against targets and ensuring timely and effective implementation of interventions. Technical and operational support to programme implementation is key, providing guidance to partners and staff on child protection principles and GBViE prevention and response strategies. Networking and partnership building are essential, fostering collaboration with government counterparts, UN agencies, NGOs, and local communities, particularly women-led organizations, to scale up GBV services. Innovation, knowledge management, and capacity building are also critical, identifying and promoting innovative approaches, documenting lessons learned, and strengthening the capacity of partners to deliver quality GBV services and implement community-based prevention interventions like Communities Care.
