Protection Intern
Organizational Context
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. UNHCR ensures that everyone can exercise their right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, and to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or resettle in a third country.
Job Purpose
The intern will support the Protection Unit in its mission to ensure the protection of refugees and other persons of concern. This involves assisting in the implementation of protection activities, conducting research, and contributing to the development of protection strategies. The intern will gain practical experience in international refugee law, protection principles, and the operational challenges faced by UNHCR. They will work under the supervision of protection officers, contributing to case management, advocacy efforts, and community-based protection initiatives. The role is crucial for enhancing the capacity of the Protection Unit to respond effectively to the needs of vulnerable populations, ensuring their rights are upheld and their safety is paramount.
Responsibilities
Assist in the implementation of protection activities, including registration, refugee status determination, and resettlement processes. Conduct research on protection issues, relevant national legislation, and UNHCR policies. Support the development and dissemination of information materials for refugees and host communities. Contribute to monitoring and reporting on protection trends and challenges. Assist in organizing and facilitating protection-related meetings, workshops, and training sessions. Provide support in case management, including documentation and follow-up of individual protection cases. Engage with refugees and community members to identify protection needs and concerns. Assist in advocacy efforts aimed at promoting refugee rights and protection standards. Support the Protection Unit in administrative tasks, such as data entry, filing, and preparing documents. Collaborate with other units within UNHCR and with implementing partners to ensure a coordinated approach to protection. Assist in the development of protection strategies and action plans. Participate in field missions as required to assess protection needs and monitor the situation of persons of concern.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is required, but relevant volunteer experience or internships in humanitarian settings or human rights organizations are considered an asset.
