Russian-English Interpreters and Translators Roster
Organizational Context
UNFPA is the lead United Nations agency dedicated to sexual and reproductive health and rights, aiming to fulfill every individual's potential. This role operates under the guidance of a Programme Specialist/Advisor, contributing to UNFPA's mandate of ensuring every pregnancy is intended, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is realized, aligning with the ICPD Programme of Action and Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
The Consultant will provide essential interpretation and translation services in Russian and English on a retainer basis. This involves delivering high-quality simultaneous or consecutive interpretation for virtual and in-person events, including meetings, workshops, and seminars. Additionally, the role requires accurate written translation and editing of various internal and external documents, reports, and briefs. The purpose is to ensure clear, effective, and confidential communication across language barriers, supporting UNFPA's programmatic activities and external relations.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to produce 100% accurate translations and interpretations, ensuring content, facts, and figures are precisely conveyed without omissions. This includes translating and proofreading all document components like footnotes, captions, and tables. Minimal use of machine translation is expected, with any machine-assisted work requiring subsequent rewriting. The consultant must effectively communicate the original meaning, research technical terminology, and maintain the source material's style and appropriate register. Cultural factors will be considered to ensure clarity for the target audience. Quality checks, proofreading, and adherence to grammatical conventions are crucial. Submitted translations become UNFPA property. Collaboration with other interpreters may be required for longer events.
Work Experience
Demonstrated experience with technical terminology related to UNFPA’s mandate (sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal health, family planning, gender-based violence, population dynamics). Prior experience working with UN system organizations is highly desirable. Applicants are requested to submit a work sample demonstrating expertise in relevant thematic areas or scientific literature.
Skills
Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills in both English and Russian. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office programs for document preparation and editing. Ability to conduct terminology research. Strong understanding of confidentiality and commitment to meeting deadlines. Effective communication and collaboration skills.
