It focuses on providing scientists from developing countries with essential continuing education and skills to foster long and productive careers in theoretical physics and related fields. ICTP plays a crucial role in global scientific development.

Job Purpose

The Associate Research Officer will support critical extra-budgetary projects, primarily the UNEP-ICTP "TRACT" project funded by the Green Climate Fund, and the UNESCO "FRIEND-NILE" project funded by the Flemish UNESCO Science Trust Fund. The role involves strengthening environmental and water-resources monitoring through the deployment of low-cost weather stations and IoT/wireless technologies. A significant focus is placed on capacity building for local technical and scientific staff in the Maldives and Nile Basin countries, ensuring sustainable implementation and knowledge transfer. The position requires direct supervision and collaboration with the Head of the STI Unit.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the UNEP-ICTP "TRACT" project in the Maldives by supporting Output 2 and Sub-activity 2.1.4, which involves deploying low-cost weather stations, terrestrial gateways, and water-level sensors, including their power and civil works. For 20% of the time, contribute to the UNESCO "FRIEND-NILE" project in the Nile Basin, supporting specific outputs by deploying similar monitoring equipment, managing datasets via IHP-WINS, and piloting a Digital Twin. Design and deliver training workshops on IoT and wireless technologies for environmental monitoring to build local capacity. Assist in managing project activities, including reporting, stakeholder communication, and maintaining contact with UNEP, national partners, and the UNESCO IHP AI Task Force. Document all deployment details for local stakeholders. Conduct applied research on the resilience and effectiveness of deployed technical solutions, aiming for scientific publications.

Work Experience

A minimum of one year of relevant experience is necessary, particularly in environmental or water resources management. Experience in an international setting and a multidisciplinary research environment is preferred.

Skills

Proficiency in coordinating technical platforms, operational management, and data governance. Expertise in a major programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript) with experience in data automation, geospatial analysis, and database management. Demonstrated experience in project coordination and stakeholder engagement. Ability to plan and conduct training programs for diverse audiences.
