Organizational Context

The UNESCO Social and Human Sciences Sector (SHS) requires specialized human resources with technical expertise and operational capabilities to manage diverse topics and maintain relationships with various counterparts across its mandated countries. This role is crucial for enhancing UNESCO's visibility and participation in national and regional forums, supporting the unified Science Sector's broad program.

Job Purpose

Under the authority of the Director of the UNESCO San José Office and direct supervision of the Programme Specialist for Science, the Individual Consultant will support the implementation of the Regular Programme activities within the Science Sector. The primary objective is to assist in the design, coordination, development, monitoring, and reporting of activities related to MOST, Youth, Sport, AI Ethics, and Digital and Frontier Technologies. This support is integral to the comprehensive execution of the Science Sector's Regular Programme for the UNESCO San José Office, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

The Consultant will provide analytical support for institutional strategic dialogues and country programming, conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses to inform program conceptualization, policies, and norms. Key responsibilities include assisting ongoing projects, executing activities within Work Plans, and supporting the reporting of Sector implementation. The role involves participating in the formulation of extra-budgetary project proposals, monitoring global initiatives, and providing technical, logistical, and administrative support. Additionally, the Consultant will support inter-agency groups on PEAS, Youth, and Gender, participate in UN System meetings when requested, and represent the Science Sector as needed. Contributions to mainstreaming gender, human rights, and interculturality are essential, alongside performing additional tasks as assigned.

Work Experience

A minimum of 8 years of proven experience in planning, designing, implementing, and coordinating programmatic, administrative, and financial aspects of sustainable development projects. Experience in budget management, financial oversight, and proficiency in office software are required. Minimum 5 years of experience in logistical support for events and managing correspondence and files is necessary.

Skills

Project management, technical writing and synthesis, inter-institutional coordination, strategic thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills are essential. Proficiency in office applications and virtual tools is required. Experience in coordinating inter-agency teams and analytical research is highly desirable.
