Job Purpose
UNESCO seeks a Qualitative Researcher to support studies on transitions and socio-emotional development within the "Horizontes Amazonía" Program. This role will provide technical assistance to the Longitudinal Learning Study (2022-2031) managed by the Ministry of Education's Quality Measurement Unit (UMC). The primary objective is to conduct a qualitative study on the transition from primary to secondary education, analyzing existing qualitative data from 2025 and reviewing a study on socio-emotional skills. The position involves coordination and dissemination activities related to the qualitative component of the UMC's longitudinal study, contributing to evidence generation for public policy.
Responsibilities
The Qualitative Researcher will be responsible for the editorial review and finalization of a qualitative study on socio-emotional skills, including its dissemination to the Ministry of Education. This role involves designing and conducting a study on primary to secondary school transitions, developing the research problem, literature review, and theoretical framework, with a focus on Peruvian and Latin American evidence and the link to socio-emotional skills. The researcher will elaborate an analysis strategy for qualitative data collected in 2025, including student drawings, focus groups, and interviews, and conduct a comparative analysis between Lima and Iquitos. Additionally, the position requires drafting a research article, deriving policy recommendations for school management, teaching practices, and family support, and presenting preliminary results to UNESCO and program partners. The role also includes technical articulation, dissemination, and transfer of findings, contributing to the design of associated questionnaires for the 2026 national assessment, and participating in coordination meetings and technical review spaces.
Work Experience
Minimum of seven years of professional experience in social or educational research, with proven expertise in in-depth interviews, focus groups, classroom observation, and case studies. Experience in conducting qualitative components of longitudinal or cohort studies, or research related to national learning assessment systems is required. Proficiency in qualitative data analysis and specialized software (NVivo, Atlas.ti) is essential.
Skills
Strong academic writing and synthesis skills for technical and policy audiences. Proficiency in qualitative analysis software and document management tools. Ability to work autonomously, meet deadlines, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams. Native or advanced Spanish proficiency and advanced English reading and academic writing skills are required.
