Organizational Context
UNESCO's Culture Sector is dedicated to enriching lives through culture, fostering inclusive societies, and promoting cultural heritage. The UNESCO Office in Peru implements projects to strengthen the cultural sector, uphold cultural rights, value diversity, and ensure the sustainable protection and management of cultural and natural heritage. This includes providing technical assistance to the Peruvian State and developing initiatives for capacity building, technical cooperation, knowledge generation, and resource mobilization for heritage protection and management.
Job Purpose
The UNESCO Office in Peru seeks a Project and Cultural Heritage Management Specialist to support its Culture Sector. The role involves strengthening the protection and management of cultural heritage, with a focus on disaster risk management, emergency preparedness and response, and heritage recovery. The specialist will also contribute to capacity building, developing cooperation initiatives, mobilizing resources, and implementing actions related to UNESCO Conventions 1970 and 1972. This position is crucial for advancing resilience and protection efforts, particularly in light of risks from extreme weather events and other emergencies affecting cultural heritage sites.
Responsibilities
The Specialist will coordinate and develop technical actions for disaster risk management, emergency preparedness, response, and cultural heritage recovery. This includes providing technical assistance for methodologies and tools, designing training content, participating in validation processes, and systematizing results into technical reports. The role also involves coordinating capacity-building activities and sustainable heritage management, especially for World Heritage Sites, by designing training proposals and coordinating with various stakeholders. Furthermore, the Specialist will contribute to implementing actions under the 1970 Convention against illicit trafficking of cultural property and support cooperation initiatives for heritage protection and sustainable management, identifying opportunities and coordinating with strategic partners.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of work experience in World Heritage site management is required. Additionally, four years of experience in preparing dossiers, reports, or diagnoses on heritage assets is necessary. At least one year of experience in similar functions within the United Nations System is also required.
Skills
Key skills include accountability, communication, planning and organizing, and results focus. Proficiency in Spanish (native or advanced/fluent) is essential. The role also requires the ability to research quantitative and qualitative information, strong organizational and planning capabilities, and the capacity for synthesis and information analysis.
