Organizational Context

UNESCO is a United Nations specialized agency committed to fostering international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication. The Division of Financial Services (FIN) is integral to this mission, ensuring the sound financial management of UNESCO's resources. FIN supports the Organization's programme delivery through effective financial policies, controls, reporting, treasury operations, accounting, and financial analysis, upholding core values of commitment, integrity, respect for diversity, and professionalism.

Job Purpose

This internship within the Division of Financial Services (FIN) offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the financial management processes of a leading international organization. Under the guidance of a supervisor, interns will contribute to FIN's core functions, which include ensuring sound financial management, supporting program delivery, and implementing effective financial policies and controls. The role involves hands-on involvement in various financial activities, providing a comprehensive understanding of treasury operations, accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls within the UN system. This experience is designed to enhance analytical, quantitative, and reporting skills, alongside professional communication and stakeholder engagement in a multicultural setting, fostering a deep understanding of accountability and transparency in international finance.

Responsibilities

Interns will actively support the Division of Financial Services in its critical functions. Key responsibilities include assisting in the collection, validation, and analysis of financial data and information. They will support the preparation of essential financial reports, dashboards, presentations, and briefing materials. Interns will contribute to the review and reconciliation of financial records and supporting documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance. They will also assist in monitoring budget implementation and expenditure trends, and support treasury, finance, accounting, financial reporting, and internal control activities as needed. Furthermore, interns may participate in process improvement initiatives, including documenting procedures and workflows, and conduct research on financial management practices within the UN system. Assisting in the preparation of correspondence and meeting documentation, and participating in team meetings to contribute to discussions on financial management issues are also expected. Performing other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor will round out the internship experience.

Work Experience

No prior work experience is strictly required for this internship. However, previous academic or practical experience in areas such as accounting, budgeting, treasury, audit, financial reporting, or data analysis is considered desirable. Familiarity with International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) or other international accounting frameworks, as well as an understanding of the financial management environment within United Nations system organizations, would be beneficial.

Skills

Strong analytical and numerical skills are essential, coupled with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. The ability to work effectively within a multicultural environment and strong interpersonal and communication skills are crucial. Interns must be capable of handling confidential information with discretion and demonstrate a collaborative spirit as a team player. Adaptability to an international working environment is also important.
