Organizational Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ecuador, through the Nature, Climate, and Energy sector, is implementing the planetGOLD Ecuador project. This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, aims to formalize artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and promote cleaner techniques to reduce mercury use. The project supports communities by improving livelihoods and environmental practices, aligning with national and international environmental commitments.

Job Purpose

The Project Assistant will provide crucial technical and operational support for the planetGOLD Ecuador project, focusing on the formalization of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and the reduction of mercury use. This role is essential for the successful execution of project activities, including supporting the implementation of strategies, coordinating with stakeholders, and assisting in the development of pilot projects. The position contributes directly to achieving the project's objectives of reducing environmental impact, improving working conditions, and enhancing market access for responsible gold production, thereby supporting sustainable development in Ecuador's mining sector.

Responsibilities

The Project Assistant will support the implementation of project activities, including strategies for mercury reduction and formalization in ASGM. This involves reviewing information, identifying risks and opportunities, and contributing to operational and strategic planning. The role requires providing operational support for coordination with public institutions, private sector, mining organizations, and territorial teams. Responsibilities include assisting in the execution and monitoring of pilot projects on clean technologies, analyzing technical information, and systematizing lessons learned. The assistant will also collaborate in organizing workshops, meetings, and training sessions, preparing materials, and documenting activities. Furthermore, the role involves supporting the collection and analysis of information for proposals, preparing terms of reference for procurement, and reviewing project reports and consultant deliverables to ensure quality and compliance.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of professional experience in project support, preferably within the environmental, natural resources, or mining sectors. Experience working with governmental or non-governmental organizations, particularly in Ecuador, is desirable. Familiarity with artisanal and small-scale mining practices and mercury reduction initiatives is advantageous.

Skills

Project support, stakeholder coordination, data collection and analysis, report writing, event organization, knowledge of artisanal and small-scale mining, mercury reduction strategies, environmental management, and proficiency in relevant software.
