Organizational Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Peru is supporting the recognition process for Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI) in the Amazon. This role is part of a project to prepare for the recognition of the Pupuña Indigenous Reserve, focusing on technical assistance for the preliminary study phase.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to provide specialized technical assistance as a Socio-Environmental Technical Assistant during the preparatory phase for the Recognition Study (EPR) of the Pupuña Indigenous Reserve Request. This involves supporting the review and systematization of environmental and socio-environmental information, conducting preliminary assessments of the area's conditions, and assisting in the planning and execution of field activities. The role contributes to ensuring the protection of indigenous peoples' rights and their territories by gathering crucial data and supporting the development of technical reports for the EPR process.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Environment and Energy Programme Officer, the Socio-Environmental Technical Assistant will provide support in reviewing and systematizing environmental, territorial, and socio-environmental information for the Pupuña Indigenous Reserve Request, identifying key aspects and information gaps for the EPR. The role involves supporting preliminary assessments of environmental, territorial, climatic, and logistical conditions to inform field activity planning and execution. Responsibilities include assisting in proposing and applying adaptation measures, planning and organizing field entries with safety and protection considerations for PIACI, and conducting periodic field visits for monitoring and verification. The assistant will also support the systematization and analysis of collected data, coordinate its integration into the EPR, and assist in preparing technical reports, findings, and recommendations.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of relevant work experience with a secondary education, or two years with a Bachelor's degree, is required. Experience should be in areas related to indigenous peoples, environmental management, territorial governance, or public management. Desirable experience includes work with peoples in isolation and initial contact (PIACI).
