The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in approximately 170 countries, focusing on poverty eradication, reducing inequalities, and exclusion. In Côte d'Ivoire, UNDP supports inclusive governance, sustainable development, and climate change adaptation, aligning with the national development plan and digital innovation agenda. This internship supports the UNDP Côte d'Ivoire office in leveraging AI and data science for development.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the UNDP Côte d'Ivoire office, particularly the Democratic Governance and Inclusive Sustainable Development portfolios, in utilizing artificial intelligence and data science for development initiatives. The role will contribute to the implementation of the Country Programme Document (CPD) 2026-2030 and the national AI roadmap. The intern will enhance internal analytical capabilities and support the execution of AI and digital transformation projects, aligning with UNDP's mission to foster sustainable and resilient growth and improve public services through digital solutions.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the analysis of AI landscape assessment results and contribute to national AI roadmap recommendations. Responsibilities include reviewing and structuring data on Côte d'Ivoire's digital and AI ecosystem, developing AI/ML prototypes for development challenges (e.g., governance, climate, social protection), and assisting UniPod teams with innovative solution tracking. The role involves producing analytical reports, technical notes, and visualizations for program teams and partners. Additionally, the intern will participate in capacity-building activities on responsible AI, contribute to data-driven decision-making tools, enhance data collection and visualization capabilities, and document methodologies and results. A final internship report and potential academic contribution are also expected.
Work Experience
No specific work experience is explicitly required for this internship. However, an interest or experience in 'AI for Good' applications, data governance, or public policy is considered an asset. Familiarity with the UN/UNDP and its mandate is also advantageous.
Skills
Technical Skills: Proficiency in data science programming languages (preferably Python), AI/ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face), data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., pandas, Power BI, Tableau), and basic database management (SQL/NoSQL). Soft Skills: Strong analytical, synthesis, and methodological rigor; interest in sustainable development and Côte d'Ivoire's context; good communication, writing, and research skills; organizational and time management abilities; attention to detail; ability to work independently and effectively; cross-cultural communication skills. Language: French required; English desirable.
